CONSTIPATION

CONSTIPATION

The hormonal changes of pregnancy, along with the positioning of the baby and fiber and fluid intake, make pregnant women more susceptible to constipation. Iron pills (ferrous sulfate) can also lead to constipation.

TREATMENT Diet

Recommended Food

Eat plenty of fiber—fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and beans—to encour- age regularity. Dried fruits—especially that old standby, prunes—are another good choice.

Drink a glass of clean water every two waking hours. You will keep food moving through your digestive system.

A hot beverage at breakfast will often wake up a sluggish digestive system. Try herbal tea or hot water with a little lemon juice.

Food to Avoid

Do not eat fatty, greasy, or fried foods, which travel slowly through the intestines.
